Yoga Retreats in Santa Catalina, Panama: The Complete Guide

A guide to yoga, surf, nature and retreat life on Panama’s Pacific coast.

By Ian Pescod · Last updated October 6, 2026

Santa Catalina is one of Panama's most distinctive destinations for a yoga retreat.

On the Pacific coast of Veraguas, this small former fishing and surf town sits at the edge of the ocean, with Coiba National Park offshore and jungle-covered hills surrounding the coast. The setting is naturally conducive to slowing down: mornings can begin with yoga, afternoons can be spent surfing or exploring the water, and evenings tend to be quiet.

Unlike a traditional wellness resort, Santa Catalina remains a relatively rustic destination. Its appeal is less about luxury infrastructure and more about the combination of yoga, ocean, nature and adventure.

For travelers looking for a retreat that feels connected to its surroundings rather than separated from them, that is precisely the attraction.

Why choose Santa Catalina for a yoga retreat?

Santa Catalina works particularly well for retreats because several experiences come together in a relatively small area.

There is a strong surf culture, access to some of Panama's most important marine environments, beaches and jungle, and an established community of accommodations and retreat operators. Yoga has become part of that ecosystem rather than existing separately from it.

The town is also remote enough to create a genuine sense of getting away. Santa Catalina is roughly a six-hour journey from Panama City by road, depending on conditions and transportation, so arriving here feels different from simply checking into a resort outside the capital.

That combination makes Santa Catalina particularly appealing for retreats built around:

  • Yoga and surf

  • Women's retreats

  • Breathwork and meditation

  • Rest and restoration

  • Movement and fitness

  • Ocean and nature experiences

  • Small-group retreats

  • Yoga combined with adventure

It is less suited to someone looking for a highly polished resort experience with extensive shopping, nightlife or urban conveniences.

What is Santa Catalina like?

Santa Catalina is small, relaxed and relatively undeveloped compared with Panama's larger beach destinations.

The town grew around fishing and surfing, and its identity is still strongly connected to the ocean. The main surf break has helped put Santa Catalina on the international surfing map, while nearby Coiba National Park has made the town an important base for diving, snorkeling and marine excursions.

For a retreat traveler, the important thing is to understand the pace.

You are not coming here for a long list of attractions or a sophisticated nightlife scene. You are coming to spend time outside, move your body, get in the ocean, eat well, read, rest and have fewer distractions.

That can be exactly what makes a retreat work.

Santa Catalina also retains some of the practical limitations of a remote coastal town. There are limited financial services, and visitors are advised to carry sufficient cash. Internet is available but can be less reliable than in Panama City, and there is no fuel station in town.

For most retreat guests, these aren't major inconveniences. But they are part of the experience and worth knowing before you go.

What are yoga retreats in Santa Catalina like?

There is no single Santa Catalina retreat style.

The destination has developed around several overlapping forms of wellness travel, so one retreat might be centered around a daily yoga practice while another combines yoga with Pilates, breathwork, meditation, surf or other forms of movement.

Yoga and surf retreats

This is perhaps the most natural combination for Santa Catalina.

Surfing and yoga complement each other well, and local operators have been running surf-and-yoga retreats in the area for years. Some programs are designed for complete beginners, while others are aimed at travelers who already surf.

The appeal is straightforward: practice yoga in the morning, spend part of the day in or around the ocean, and return to movement or restorative practice later.

You don't need to be an experienced surfer to choose this type of retreat. Some programs specifically cater to beginners.

Women's retreats

Santa Catalina currently has a strong selection of women's retreats.

These range from yoga-centered experiences to broader wellness programs incorporating meditation, breathwork, Pilates, restorative practices, cacao, journaling and other forms of personal reflection.

The emphasis varies considerably, so it is worth looking beyond the label "women's retreat" and asking what the actual daily experience will be like.

Restorative and wellness retreats

Some retreats use Santa Catalina primarily as a place to disconnect and reset.

These experiences may place less emphasis on intensive yoga and more on restorative movement, meditation, breathwork, nourishing food, time outdoors and unstructured time.

This can be a particularly good fit if your goal is recovery rather than deepening an athletic yoga practice.

Yoga and movement retreats

Santa Catalina also works well for retreats that combine yoga with other movement disciplines.

Current and upcoming retreats in the destination include combinations of yoga, Pilates, barre, breathwork and restorative practices, reflecting the broader wellness ecosystem that has developed around the town.

What can you do besides yoga?

One of Santa Catalina's biggest advantages as a retreat destination is that there is plenty to do between practices.

Surf

Surfing is the activity most closely associated with Santa Catalina.

The destination is known for powerful Pacific waves and has hosted international surfing competitions. The surf can be experienced at different levels, although the famous main break is not the place for a complete beginner. Playa Estero is a more accessible option for learning.

Even if you don't surf, the town's surf culture contributes significantly to its atmosphere.

Explore Coiba National Park

For many visitors, this is the highlight of coming to Santa Catalina.

Coiba National Park lies offshore and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The protected area includes Coiba Island, dozens of smaller islands and surrounding marine ecosystems, and is recognized for its exceptional biodiversity.

Day trips from Santa Catalina can include snorkeling, diving, beaches and wildlife encounters.

The marine environment is particularly impressive, with coral reefs, sharks, turtles, dolphins and other marine life found in the area. Humpback whales can also be encountered seasonally.

For a yoga retreat, a Coiba excursion can be a natural complement to the practice: a full day on the water followed by a quieter evening is very different from spending an entire retreat inside a resort.

Whale watching

Humpback whales migrate through Panama's Pacific waters between approximately July and October.

Santa Catalina is one of the departure points for whale-watching excursions in the region, and Coiba and the surrounding waters are important marine habitats.

Sightings are never guaranteed, of course, but if you are visiting during this period, marine wildlife can become an additional part of the retreat experience.

Snorkeling and diving

The waters around Coiba are one of the main reasons divers and snorkelers travel to Santa Catalina.

The area forms part of the Eastern Tropical Pacific marine corridor and is recognized for its exceptional biodiversity.

Paddleboarding, kayaking and other ocean activities

Depending on conditions and the retreat, you may also find opportunities for paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing and other water-based activities.

This is one reason Santa Catalina works so well for active retreats: the destination itself provides opportunities to move beyond the yoga mat.

When is the best time for a yoga retreat in Santa Catalina?

There isn't one universally best season. The right time depends on what you want from the retreat.

December to April: drier and sunnier

The dry season generally runs from December through April.

This is the more predictable period if your priority is sunshine, beach time and outdoor activities. The ocean can also be calmer for certain excursions.

For travelers who want a classic tropical retreat experience, this is an attractive window.

May to November: greener, wetter and more dynamic

The rainy season generally runs from May through November.

Rain does not necessarily mean a washed-out vacation. In Santa Catalina, showers often form part of the rhythm of the tropical environment, and the landscape becomes particularly lush.

The Pacific swell can also become larger during this period, making it attractive to surfers. Official tourism sources identify April through November as the longer peak surf season.

July through October is also the main humpback whale season, adding another reason to consider visiting during the wetter months.

For a yoga retreat, the green season can actually be appealing if you don't require uninterrupted sunshine. The slower atmosphere and lush landscape can complement a retreat focused on rest and introspection.

How much does a yoga retreat in Santa Catalina cost?

Prices vary substantially depending on the retreat length, accommodation, inclusions and level of programming.

Current retreats listed in Santa Catalina range from roughly $2,200 to $3,800+, with some premium experiences priced higher.

For example, current Yoga Around The World listings include women's retreats combining yoga, Pilates, meditation and wellness programming, as well as retreats focused on breathwork, restorative practice and deeper personal work.

When comparing prices, don't look only at the number.

Check what is included:

  • Accommodation

  • Meals

  • Airport transfers

  • Yoga classes

  • Surf lessons

  • Excursions

  • Wellness treatments

  • Equipment

  • Workshops

  • Local transportation

A retreat with a higher headline price may include considerably more of the actual trip.

How do you get to Santa Catalina?

Santa Catalina is remote, and getting there is part of the experience.

From Panama City, the journey takes approximately six hours by road under normal conditions, although actual travel time varies. You can drive yourself or arrange private/shared transportation.

For public transportation, the usual route involves traveling from Panama City to Soná and then continuing toward Santa Catalina by local transport or taxi.

Some retreat operators arrange transfers from Panama City or the airport, which can make the journey considerably easier—especially if you're traveling with a group or arriving specifically for a retreat.

If a retreat includes transportation, check exactly where the transfer begins and whether airport pickup is included before booking flights.

Is Santa Catalina good for a yoga retreat if you're a beginner?

Yes—but the answer depends more on the retreat than the destination.

Santa Catalina itself doesn't require you to be an experienced yogi. Many retreats welcome different experience levels, and some local yoga-and-surf programs explicitly cater to beginners through intermediate practitioners.

The more important question is what kind of practice the retreat offers.

If you're new to yoga, look for retreats describing their practices as:

  • Beginner-friendly

  • Multi-level

  • Hatha

  • Gentle

  • Restorative

  • Slow flow

  • Meditation-focused

If you already have an established practice, you may prefer a retreat with more structured or intensive sessions.

And if surfing is part of the program, ask whether the surf component is beginner-friendly as well.

Who is Santa Catalina best suited for?

Santa Catalina is particularly well suited to travelers who want a retreat that combines practice with place.

It may be a strong fit if you:

  • Want to spend significant time outdoors

  • Enjoy the ocean

  • Like small, relaxed destinations

  • Want to combine yoga with surfing or adventure

  • Prefer nature to nightlife

  • Don't mind a longer journey to get there

  • Want some distance from city life

  • Enjoy a less polished, more authentic travel experience

It may be less suitable if you:

  • Want extensive luxury infrastructure

  • Need reliable high-speed internet throughout the day

  • Prefer shopping, nightlife or urban conveniences

  • Don't enjoy being somewhere remote

  • Want a retreat where almost everything happens within a resort

Santa Catalina rewards travelers who are comfortable with simplicity.

How to choose the right Santa Catalina yoga retreat

The destination is only half of the decision. The retreat itself matters just as much.

Start with the experience you actually want.

For surf and adventure

Look for a retreat that combines yoga with surf lessons, ocean activities or excursions.

For deep rest

Prioritize restorative yoga, meditation, breathwork, massage and plenty of unstructured time.

For personal transformation

Look for retreats that clearly explain their approach to breathwork, workshops, group work or other transformational practices.

For an active wellness week

Look for combinations of yoga, Pilates, barre, hiking, swimming, surfing or other movement.

For community

Pay attention to group size and accommodation. A small retreat can feel very different from a larger hosted group.

Most importantly, look beyond the retreat title.

Read the actual schedule.

Two retreats can both describe themselves as "yoga retreats" while offering completely different experiences.

Current yoga retreats in Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina has become one of the most active yoga-retreat destinations in Panama, and the retreat calendar changes throughout the year.

Yoga Around The World's current Santa Catalina collection includes retreats ranging from women's yoga and wellness experiences to breathwork, restorative practice, Pilates and more traditional yoga-centered programs.

Among the current listings are:

  • Entre Olas y Raíces — a Spanish-language women's retreat combining yoga, cacao, creative practices and time in nature.

  • The Vital Woman: Return to Self — a women's wellness retreat combining yoga, Pilates, barre, restorative practices and wellness workshops.

  • The Transcend Retreat — an intimate women's retreat centered on breathwork, gentle yoga, Reiki and restoration.

  • Retreat to Recharge — a women's retreat combining yoga, Pilates, meditation, breathwork and ocean activities.

The collection changes as new retreats are announced, so the Santa Catalina destination page is the best place to see currently listed dates and availability.

Santa Catalina vs. other yoga retreat destinations in Panama

Santa Catalina has a distinct character within Panama's retreat landscape.

Santa Catalina is best known for the combination of yoga, surf, ocean adventure and access to Coiba.

Cambutal offers a more remote Pacific experience with surf, jungle and a quieter atmosphere.

Cañas is smaller and more secluded, with a stronger emphasis on nature and retreat-style stays.

Boquete offers a completely different environment: mountains, cloud forest, cooler temperatures and a slower highland atmosphere.

Bocas del Toro brings a Caribbean setting, islands, tropical water and a more island-oriented experience.

Choosing between them is less about finding the "best" destination and more about finding the landscape that fits the retreat you want.

A yoga retreat at the edge of the Pacific

Santa Catalina isn't a destination that tries to impress you with infrastructure.

Its appeal is simpler.

There is the ocean, the jungle, the surf, the small town, the boats leaving for Coiba, the changing Pacific weather and the space that comes from being somewhere relatively remote.

For a yoga retreat, that can be more valuable than a long list of amenities.

You can practice in the morning, spend the afternoon in the ocean, watch the sunset, eat dinner and have very little reason to look at your phone.

That is the kind of setting that makes Santa Catalina worth traveling for.

If you're looking for a yoga retreat in Panama that combines practice, nature and a genuine sense of place, Santa Catalina is one of the country's strongest options.
