Yoga Retreats in Cañas, Panama: The Complete Guide

A guide to yoga, nature and retreat life on Panama’s Pacific coast.

By Ian Pescod ·

Cañas is not the first place that comes to mind when people talk about yoga retreats in Panama.

It probably should be.

Located in Los Santos on Panama's Pacific coast, Cañas sits in a quieter part of the country, surrounded by jungle, ocean and the beaches of the Azuero Peninsula. It does not have the established surf-town atmosphere of Santa Catalina, or the remote, end-of-the-road feeling of Cambutal. Instead, its appeal is more understated: nature, space and the possibility of staying somewhere designed specifically for retreat life.

The yoga retreat scene here is also relatively small. That is part of the point. Cañas is not a destination with dozens of retreats competing for your attention. It is better understood as a place where a handful of purpose-built wellness spaces can create a more private and immersive experience.

Why choose Cañas for a yoga retreat?

The biggest reason to choose Cañas is the setting.

This part of Los Santos combines Pacific beaches, tropical vegetation and a quieter pace of life. The wider Pedasí and Tonosí region is known for surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, whale watching and wildlife experiences, while nearby Isla Cañas is particularly known for sea turtle nesting between July and November.

For a retreat, that creates an interesting balance.

You can spend the morning practicing yoga, move into a surf lesson or nature excursion in the afternoon, and still have enough space in the day to do very little.

Cañas also has something that is increasingly difficult to find in popular wellness destinations: a sense that you are actually getting away.

What is Cañas, Panama like?

Cañas is a small community in Los Santos Province, on the Pacific side of Panama.

It is not a traditional tourist town in the way Santa Catalina or Playa Venao are. The surrounding area is rural and relatively quiet, with beaches, jungle and small communities spread across the landscape.

That means you should not come here expecting a long list of cafés, restaurants, boutiques and wellness studios outside your retreat.

Instead, the retreat itself is likely to become much more of your environment.

That distinction matters.

For some travelers, it is exactly what makes Cañas attractive. You are not constantly deciding where to go next. The landscape, accommodation, meals and retreat program become the structure of your stay.

For others, a destination with more independent restaurants, nightlife and activities within walking distance may be a better fit.

What are yoga retreats in Cañas like?

Yoga retreats in Cañas tend to lean toward wellness, nature, personal development and ocean-based experiences, rather than being purely yoga-focused.

One of the area's best-known retreat centers is Alaya Panama, a private wellness and retreat property in Cañas that combines yoga, surf, nature and holistic experiences. The property describes itself as a private estate between jungle and ocean, with accommodations ranging from villas and bungalows to luxury domes.

Past and current retreat programs at Alaya have included daily yoga, surfing, waterfall excursions, cacao ceremonies, wellness treatments and other activities designed around connection and restoration.

This makes Cañas particularly interesting if you are looking for a retreat that combines yoga with a broader wellness program.

Yoga and wellness

Yoga may be one part of the experience rather than the entire experience.

Depending on the retreat and facilitator, you may find yoga paired with meditation, breathwork, Reiki, sound healing, journaling, personal-development workshops or other practices.

That makes Cañas a good destination for someone who wants the retreat to feel like more than a yoga holiday.

Yoga and surf

The Pacific coast is an important part of the experience.

Nearby Playa Venao is one of Panama's better-known surf destinations, and the broader Pedasí–Tonosí region offers opportunities for surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking and other water activities.

Some retreats use that environment directly, combining yoga with surf instruction and time in the ocean.

The result is less "yoga retreat in isolation" and more of an active tropical reset.

Wellness and personal growth

Cañas is also suited to retreats built around slowing down and turning inward.

The setting lends itself naturally to digital detoxes, meditation, restorative practices and personal-development work. Alaya, for example, currently promotes wellness programs and private retreats alongside its yoga and surf offerings.

If your idea of a retreat involves doing less rather than fitting as many activities as possible into a week, this can be a particularly good match.

What can you do besides yoga?

One of the advantages of a Cañas retreat is that the surrounding region gives you plenty to do when you want to leave the mat.

Surfing

Playa Venao is close enough to make surfing a natural part of a retreat in the area. The wider coast also has a number of surf beaches, ranging from beginner-friendly options to more challenging breaks.

Waterfalls and hiking

The tropical landscape around Los Santos provides opportunities for hiking and nature excursions. Depending on your retreat, these may be organized as part of the program rather than something you arrange independently.

Ocean activities

Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, diving and fishing are all available in the wider Pedasí and Tonosí region.

Whales and sea turtles

The Pacific coast becomes particularly interesting for wildlife between July and November.

Humpback whales migrate through the area from roughly July to October, while sea turtle nesting takes place along several beaches between July and November. Isla Cañas is one of the notable locations for turtle conservation and nesting experiences.

These seasonal experiences can add something memorable to a retreat without requiring the trip to revolve around sightseeing.

Or simply stay put

There is also a good argument for not doing much at all.

A retreat in Cañas can be about having nowhere else you need to be.

That may mean reading by the pool, sitting near the ocean, taking a longer lunch, practicing in the shade or watching the landscape change around you.

Sometimes that is the actual retreat.

When is the best time to visit Cañas for a yoga retreat?

Panama has a dry season from roughly December through April and a green season through much of the rest of the year.

The Pacific side of Los Santos generally has a relatively manageable climate even during the wetter months. During the green season, rain can be part of the rhythm of the day, but the landscape becomes particularly lush.

December to April

The dry season is generally the easiest choice if you want more predictable sunshine and outdoor activities.

It is particularly appealing for a retreat centered around beach time, surfing and outdoor excursions.

May to November

The green season brings more rain but also greener vegetation and, depending on the month, opportunities for wildlife experiences.

July through October is particularly interesting if whale watching appeals to you, while July through November overlaps with sea turtle nesting season in the region.

For a retreat, there is no universally "best" season. It depends on whether you prioritize dry weather or the more intensely tropical landscape and seasonal wildlife of the wetter months.

How much does a yoga retreat in Cañas cost?

Prices vary considerably depending on the retreat, accommodation and what is included.

Cañas is home to both retreat programs and private-estate experiences, so there is no single price range that represents the destination.

For example, an Alaya yoga and surf retreat listed through BookYogaRetreats included six nights of accommodation, daily yoga, surf lessons, a waterfall excursion, meals and transportation from Panama City as part of the package.

Current retreat pricing should therefore be evaluated based on what is actually included, rather than simply comparing the headline price.

Look at:

  • Number of nights

  • Accommodation type

  • Meals

  • Yoga and other sessions

  • Surf or adventure activities

  • Airport or Panama City transfers

  • Spa or wellness treatments

  • Excursions

  • Whether the retreat is shared or private

A retreat that looks more expensive at first may include considerably more of the trip.

How do you get to Cañas?

Cañas is in Los Santos Province on Panama's Pacific coast.

Most international travelers will arrive through Tocumen International Airport in Panama City and continue overland toward the Azuero Peninsula.

Because Cañas is not a major tourist hub, transportation is an important thing to clarify before booking a retreat.

Some retreat packages include transportation from Panama City. Others require you to arrange your own transfer. One Alaya retreat listing, for example, included scheduled group transportation to and from Panama City.

If transportation is not included, confirm the exact pickup point and final destination with the retreat host before booking.

Are Cañas yoga retreats suitable for beginners?

Yes.

Your experience level is generally less important than choosing a retreat whose style matches what you are looking for.

If you are new to yoga, look for retreats that describe their classes as beginner-friendly or open-level. If the retreat includes multiple daily practices, ask how physically demanding they are.

The same applies to surfing and other activities.

You do not need to arrive already knowing how to surf, meditate or practice yoga. But you should understand what the retreat is actually asking of you.

A retreat centered around daily surf sessions and active excursions will feel very different from one built around meditation, restorative yoga and personal development.

Who is a yoga retreat in Cañas best for?

Cañas is particularly well suited to travelers who want:

  • A quieter Pacific-coast setting

  • Yoga combined with broader wellness practices

  • Nature without a highly developed tourist environment

  • Surf and ocean activities

  • A retreat where the accommodation is part of the experience

  • More privacy and space

  • A slower, less structured pace between activities

It may be less suitable if you want to walk out of your retreat and immediately find lots of restaurants, nightlife, shops or independent activities.

For that, Santa Catalina or Playa Venao may offer more.

Cañas vs. Santa Catalina vs. Cambutal

These three destinations are all on Panama's Pacific side, but they create very different retreat experiences.

Cañas is the quieter, more private option. Its strength is purpose-built wellness spaces, jungle and ocean, and a retreat experience that can feel self-contained.

Santa Catalina has more of a recognizable surf-town identity. It is still small and relaxed, but there is more of a destination around the retreat itself. Its proximity to Coiba National Park also makes it particularly compelling for diving,
