Yoga and Surf Retreats in Panama: The Complete Guide

A guide to combining yoga, surfing, ocean time and adventure on Panama's Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

By Ian Pescod ·

There is something satisfying about the combination of yoga and surfing.

Both practices ask you to pay attention to your body. Both require a certain amount of patience. And both become more interesting when you stop trying to control every part of the experience.

Panama happens to be a particularly good place to combine them.

Its Pacific coast has established surf destinations such as Santa Catalina and Cambutal, while Bocas del Toro offers a Caribbean version of the experience. Retreats range from dedicated surf-and-yoga camps to broader wellness programs where surfing is one part of the week.

But a yoga and surf retreat is not necessarily the same thing as a surf camp with a yoga class added.

The best programs use the two practices to complement each other.

What is a yoga and surf retreat?

A yoga and surf retreat combines regular yoga practice with surfing, usually alongside accommodation, meals and additional activities.

The balance varies considerably.

One retreat might have surfing every day and yoga once or twice a day. Another might make yoga the central practice and offer several surf sessions during the week.

You may also find meditation, breathwork, hiking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, massage or other wellness activities included.

For example, current Panama retreat listings include seven-day programs combining surf coaching, yoga and meditation, as well as broader wellness and adventure retreats with surfing as one of the included experiences.

That makes it important to look beyond the words "surf and yoga retreat" and understand what the actual week looks like.

Why choose Panama for a yoga and surf retreat?

Panama gives you something that is increasingly difficult to find in more established surf destinations: variety without needing to travel very far.

The Pacific coast has warm water, surf towns, long stretches of coastline and a relatively undeveloped feel in many areas.

Santa Catalina is the best-known example. It has a long-established surf culture and is also the gateway for excursions to Coiba National Park.

Cambutal offers a more remote version of the experience, where surfing, yoga and nature are closely connected to the retreat environment.

On the Caribbean side, Bocas del Toro adds islands, jungle and tropical water to the equation.

The result is that you can choose the kind of surf retreat you want rather than simply choosing a country.

Where are the best yoga and surf retreats in Panama?

Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is probably the most obvious place to start if surfing is an important part of your retreat.

It is a small Pacific surf town with access to a range of breaks and a well-established community of surf and wellness operators.

Current retreat offerings include dedicated seven-day surf-and-yoga camps as well as longer programs combining daily yoga, meditation and surf lessons.

Some programs are designed for complete beginners, while others accommodate experienced surfers.

That makes Santa Catalina a good choice if you want surfing to be a genuine part of the trip rather than simply something available nearby.

Best for: surf + yoga + town life + adventure.

Cambutal

Cambutal feels more remote.

The setting is Pacific coastline, jungle and surf, with a stronger sense that you have left normal life behind.

It is particularly suited to retreats where surfing is combined with yoga, nature and a slower pace rather than treated as a standalone sport.

There are also established retreat properties in the area with year-round yoga and surf programming.

Best for: surf + yoga + nature + isolation.

Bocas del Toro

Bocas offers a different version of a yoga and surf retreat.

Instead of the Pacific surf-town atmosphere of Santa Catalina or Cambutal, you get Caribbean islands, jungle and water activities.

Surfing is available in the archipelago, although the experience is more dependent on the particular island and season.

For someone who wants a tropical island retreat where surfing is one part of a broader experience, Bocas can make sense.

Best for: islands + jungle + water + yoga, with surfing as part of the experience.

Do you need to know how to surf?

No.

Several current Panama retreats are explicitly open to beginner surfers, and some include professional instruction and equipment. One current Santa Catalina program, for example, offers surf coaching alongside daily yoga and meditation and accepts beginner through advanced participants.

That said, there is a difference between being able to surf and being willing to learn how to surf.

Your first few sessions may involve more falling than riding.

That is part of the experience.

If you are completely new to surfing, look for a retreat that includes:

  • Professional instruction

  • Beginner-friendly surf breaks

  • Board and equipment rental

  • Transportation to the beach

  • Small or manageable groups

  • Enough time between sessions to recover

You should also find out whether surf lessons are actually included or simply available as an optional extra.

What does a typical day look like?

There is no standard schedule, but a yoga and surf retreat often follows a rhythm something like this:

Morning

Yoga practice, followed by breakfast.

Late morning

Surf lesson or surf session.

Afternoon

Lunch and free time.

Late afternoon

Restorative yoga, meditation or another practice.

Evening

Dinner, relaxation or a group activity.

One current Santa Catalina retreat follows a similar structure, with morning yoga, breakfast, surfing or excursions, free time, an evening restorative class and dinner.

This rhythm works well because the two practices complement each other.

Yoga can prepare your body for movement and help you slow down afterward. Surfing gets you outside, into the ocean and out of your head.

And then there is the important part of the schedule:

free time.

A retreat does not need to fill every hour.

Is surfing physically demanding?

Yes.

Even beginner surfing can be surprisingly tiring.

You are paddling, repeatedly getting back onto the board, moving through waves and using muscles that may not be accustomed to the workload.

That is one reason yoga can pair so well with surfing.

Mobility, balance, breath awareness and recovery work all have obvious applications.

But don't assume that adding yoga automatically makes a surf retreat easy.

If the program includes daily surfing and daily yoga, it may be one of the more physically active types of retreat you can choose.

If you are looking for deep rest, look for a program that gives you substantial recovery time.

What type of yoga is best for surfing?

There is no single "best" style.

A retreat may include Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, restorative yoga or a combination.

Different styles can serve different parts of the experience.

Vinyasa can provide a more active practice and build strength and mobility.

Hatha can offer a balanced practice with time to work on alignment, breathing and body awareness.

Yin can provide a slower counterpoint to the physical demands of surfing.

Restorative yoga can be particularly useful when recovery is the priority.

The quality of the teacher and the way the practice is programmed may matter more than the label.

A thoughtful teacher will understand that people may be tired from surfing and adapt the practice accordingly.

What else can you do on a yoga and surf retreat?

The ocean is usually only the beginning.

Depending on the destination and retreat, activities can include:

  • Snorkeling

  • Diving

  • Paddleboarding

  • Kayaking

  • Hiking

  • Wildlife excursions

  • Boat trips

  • Massage

  • Meditation

  • Breathwork

  • Horseback riding

Santa Catalina is particularly well positioned for marine activities because of its proximity to Coiba National Park.

Some current retreat programs include the option of visiting Coiba for snorkeling or diving, while others offer paddleboarding, hiking and other excursions.

Cambutal offers a more land-and-ocean combination, with surfing, hiking and nature experiences forming part of the broader retreat environment.

Bocas adds the particular character of island travel.

The important thing is not to choose a retreat because it offers the longest activity list.

Choose one where the activities actually appeal to you.

When is the best time for a surf and yoga retreat in Panama?

This depends partly on where you go and what you want from the trip.

Panama's Pacific coast generally has a dry season from December through April and a wetter green season through much of the rest of the year.

Many surf-and-yoga programs operate across multiple months rather than being limited to a single season.

Current Waluaa programs near Santa Catalina, for example, are listed from November through May, with several 2026–2027 arrival dates.

The best time for your retreat depends on the combination of surf conditions, weather, crowds and the type of experience you want.

If predictable dry weather is important, the dry season is the obvious starting point.

If you care more about lush landscapes and are comfortable with tropical rain, the green season can also be rewarding.

How much does a yoga and surf retreat in Panama cost?

Current dedicated yoga-and-surf retreats in Panama generally sit in the mid-to-upper range of retreat pricing.

Current listings include seven-day surf-and-yoga programs from around $2,500, with other seven-day yoga, wellness and adventure programs around $2,600–$3,100, depending on the accommodation and package.

The price can change significantly depending on:

  • Private versus shared accommodation

  • Number of nights

  • Meals

  • Surf lessons

  • Equipment

  • Airport transfers

  • Excursions

  • Yoga schedule

  • Spa treatments

  • Group size

For example, one current Santa Catalina program includes accommodation, daily meals, daily yoga, meditation, a surf lesson, equipment and transfers, while additional excursions and spa treatments cost extra.

So don't compare retreats by price alone.

Compare what you actually receive for the price.

What should you look for when choosing a surf and yoga retreat?

Before booking, ask a few simple questions.

How much surfing is actually included?

"Surf retreat" can mean one surf lesson during a seven-day stay.

It can also mean surfing every day.

Those are very different experiences.

Is the surfing beginner-friendly?

If you've never surfed before, this matters.

Find out what beach you'll be using, whether professional instruction is provided and how much time you spend in the water.

Is equipment included?

Boards, leashes, rash guards and transportation can add up if they are not included.

How much yoga is included?

Some retreats have one class per day. Others have two or more.

Also look at the styles being taught.

How much free time do you have?

This is easy to overlook.

If every day is filled with surfing, yoga and excursions, you may come home needing another vacation.

Where exactly are you staying?

A retreat can be in Santa Catalina without being in the center of town.

One current Waluaa property, for example, is outside the main town but close enough to reach Santa Catalina by car, creating a more secluded experience while retaining access to the surf community.

That distinction can be exactly what you want—or not.

Yoga and surf retreat vs. surf camp

The difference is mostly emphasis.

A surf camp generally puts surfing first.

Yoga may be included as recovery, mobility or a complementary activity.

A yoga and surf retreat tends to give both practices more attention.

The yoga may be central to the daily schedule, while surfing becomes the physical and outdoor counterpart.

Neither is better.

If your primary goal is to improve your surfing, choose the surf camp.

If you want a broader wellness experience where surfing and yoga balance each other, choose the retreat.

Who are yoga and surf retreats best for?

This type of retreat is particularly good for people who:

  • Enjoy being physically active

  • Like being outdoors

  • Want more than traditional yoga classes

  • Are curious about surfing

  • Enjoy ocean environments

  • Want a balance of activity and relaxation

  • Prefer experiential travel to a conventional resort holiday

It may not be the best fit if your main goal is deep rest or intensive meditation.

In that case, a restorative or wellness-focused retreat may serve you better.

Santa Catalina or Cambutal?

If you know you want a yoga and surf retreat but aren't sure where to go, the choice often comes down to these two Pacific destinations.

Choose Santa Catalina if you want:

  • A more established surf culture

  • Access to Coiba

  • More independent restaurants and services

  • A destination you can explore outside the retreat

  • A combination of surfing, yoga and marine adventure

Choose Cambutal if you want:

  • More isolation

  • A quieter atmosphere

  • Surfing and yoga surrounded by nature

  • A retreat that feels more self-contained

  • Less of a traditional surf-town experience

Both work.

They simply create different weeks.

Current yoga and surf retreats in Panama

The market changes throughout the year, so it is worth checking current dates before planning around a specific retreat.

Current Panama listings include several surf-and-yoga programs around Santa Catalina/Veraguas, with seven-day options currently starting around $2,500.

Yoga Around The World will continue adding current retreats as dates are confirmed.

A different way to experience Panama

A surfboard and a yoga mat may seem like very different tools.

One puts you in the ocean.

The other puts you on the ground.

But the experiences have more in common than you might expect.

Both require attention. Both involve repetition. Both reward patience. And both have a way of making you aware that you cannot control the ocean—or your body—as much as you sometimes think you can.

That is part of what makes a yoga and surf retreat worthwhile.

You spend part of the day trying to catch a wave.

And part of it learning to let the wave go.
