Best Time for a Yoga Retreat in Panama: A Month-by-Month Guide
When to visit Panama for yoga, surf, nature, wellness and retreat life.
By Ian Pescod ·
There is no single best month for a yoga retreat in Panama.
There is a best month for the kind of retreat you want.
If you want predictable sunshine, December through April is the obvious starting point. If you want lush jungle, fewer expectations about perfect weather and stronger surf conditions on parts of the Pacific coast, the green season can be just as interesting.
And if wildlife is part of the reason you are going, the answer changes again.
Panama has a tropical climate, with relatively small temperature variations throughout the year. The bigger difference is rainfall. The country generally has a dry season from December through April and a green season through the rest of the year, although conditions vary considerably by region and elevation.
For a yoga retreat, that means the calendar is less about avoiding "bad weather" and more about deciding what kind of experience you want.
When is the best time for a yoga retreat in Panama?
For most travelers, December through April is the easiest time to plan a yoga retreat in Panama.
The weather is generally drier, skies are clearer and outdoor activities are easier to plan.
But that doesn't make it automatically the best.
If your retreat is focused on surfing, some Pacific destinations can actually be more interesting during the green season. The Panama Tourism Authority recommends April through November for stronger surf conditions around Santa Catalina, while noting that December through March still offers good surfing along with drier weather.
If you care about lush landscapes, waterfalls, wildlife or a quieter tropical atmosphere, the green season has its own advantages.
So the short answer is:
Best overall weather: December–April
Best for lush nature: May–November
Best for Pacific surf: roughly April–November
Best for a combination of dry weather and outdoor activities: January–March
Best for certain wildlife experiences: depends on the destination and species
The more useful answer, though, is to look at the year month by month.
Panama's two seasons
Before looking at individual months, it helps to understand the basic pattern.
Dry season: December to April
Panama's dry season is often called summer, or verano, even though the country is tropical year-round.
Rainfall generally decreases, skies are clearer and outdoor conditions are more predictable.
This is particularly appealing if your retreat revolves around:
Beach time
Surfing
Hiking
Outdoor yoga
Boat trips
Island excursions
Exploring between retreat sessions
The trade-off is that some landscapes become less intensely green, and popular destinations can feel busier.
Green season: May to November
The green season brings more frequent rainfall, but "rainy season" can give the wrong impression.
It does not necessarily mean that it rains continuously all day.
Panama's official tourism guidance describes the green season as more unpredictable, with rain often followed by periods of sunshine. The benefit is a much greener landscape and particularly strong conditions for waterfalls and biodiversity.
For a retreat, that can actually be beautiful.
You practice yoga while rain moves across the jungle.
Then the clouds clear.
The ground is wet, everything is green, and you go back outside.
That is a different experience from a week of uninterrupted sunshine, but it is not necessarily a worse one.
Yoga retreats in Panama by month
January
January is one of the safest choices if you want classic Panama weather.
It falls squarely within the dry season, making it particularly attractive for beach retreats, surf, hiking and outdoor activities.
Santa Catalina, Cambutal and other Pacific destinations can be particularly appealing at this time of year if you want to spend a lot of time outside.
Boquete also benefits from the generally drier conditions, although its elevation means it feels very different from the coast.
Best for:
Beach retreats, outdoor yoga, hiking, surf, dry-weather travel.
Consider:
January can be a popular travel period, so desirable retreats may fill earlier.
February
February is another strong month for a yoga retreat in Panama.
The weather remains firmly within the dry season, and outdoor plans are generally easier to organize.
For a retreat, this is one of the months where the weather becomes almost secondary: you can reasonably expect to spend a large portion of your day outside.
It is a particularly good choice if you want to combine yoga with:
Surfing
Hiking
Boat trips
Diving
Snorkeling
Beach time
Best for:
Active retreats, yoga and surf, beach destinations and outdoor adventure.
March
March continues the dry season.
It is often one of the hottest-feeling periods, particularly at lower elevations, so accommodation with good ventilation, shade or air conditioning can matter.
If you are staying on the coast, the combination of heat and strong sun makes early-morning yoga particularly appealing.
For a retreat focused on rest, the best programs will give you plenty of opportunities to slow down during the hottest part of the day.
Best for:
Beach retreats, surf, outdoor activities and reliable sunshine.
Consider:
Heat and sun exposure.
April
April is an interesting transition month.
It is generally still part of Panama's dry season, but conditions begin shifting toward the wetter months.
For surfers, this can be an especially interesting time.
The Panama Tourism Authority identifies April through November as the longer peak surf season on the Pacific coast around Santa Catalina, with rainfall contributing to stronger swells.
That makes April particularly attractive if you want a surf and yoga retreat rather than a purely restorative beach retreat.
Best for:
Surf + yoga, active retreats and Pacific destinations.
Consider:
Weather becomes less predictable as the month progresses.
May
May marks the beginning of the green season.
Rain becomes more frequent, but so does the lushness that makes tropical Panama so distinctive.
If your idea of a retreat involves jungle, waterfalls and being surrounded by greenery, this can be a beautiful time to go.
The Panama Tourism Authority notes that waterfalls become particularly impressive during the rainy season because of increased rainfall.
For a retreat, May can also be a good compromise: you are moving beyond the driest months without necessarily committing to the wettest part of the year.
Best for:
Jungle retreats, waterfalls, nature and fewer expectations about perfect weather.
June
June is firmly within the green season.
On the Pacific coast, surf conditions can become more interesting, making this a good month for yoga and surf retreats.
Rain is more likely, so flexibility becomes part of the experience.
For a retreat, that isn't necessarily a problem.
In fact, a rainy afternoon can be exactly what you want after a morning of surfing or a long yoga practice.
Best for:
Surf, jungle, nature and active retreats.
Consider:
Build some flexibility into outdoor plans.
July
July continues the green season and can be particularly interesting for wildlife.
The Pacific coast begins entering a period when humpback whales are present in Panama's waters. The Panama Tourism Authority highlights whale-watching opportunities along the Pacific coast from June through October.
That makes July an interesting month for a retreat that combines yoga with marine wildlife or nature experiences.
Best for:
Surf, wildlife, nature and green-season retreats.
August
August is one of the months when the difference between Panama's two seasons becomes particularly useful to understand.
The country is lush and tropical, and Pacific destinations can have active surf conditions.
If you are choosing a retreat because you want to spend time in nature rather than because you want guaranteed sunshine every afternoon, August can work very well.
It is also within the Pacific whale-watching period.
Best for:
Nature, surf, wildlife and a more immersive tropical experience.
September
September can be one of the most interesting months if wildlife is part of your retreat.
Panama's official tourism guidance specifically highlights September as a strong month for observing migratory wildlife along parts of the country's central Pacific region.
It is still green season, so expect rain.
But the landscape is at its tropical best.
If you want a retreat where the destination itself is part of the experience, rather than simply a backdrop for the yoga studio, September is worth considering.
Best for:
Wildlife, jungle, surf and nature-focused retreats.
October
October remains firmly within the green season.
The Pacific coast can continue to offer strong surf, and whale-watching opportunities remain available.
This can also be a good period for travelers who don't mind trading some weather predictability for greener landscapes and a quieter atmosphere.
For a retreat, the key is to embrace the possibility of rain rather than treat it as a failure of the vacation.
Best for:
Surf, wildlife, jungle and quieter retreats.
November
November is a transition month.
The green season is still present, but Panama begins moving toward the drier months.
This can be an appealing period for people who want some of the lushness of the green season without waiting until the middle of the dry season.
It is also a particularly interesting month for nature and marine experiences.
Best for:
Nature, surf, wildlife and shoulder-season travel.
December
December brings the beginning of Panama's dry season.
The shift is noticeable: rain generally decreases, skies become clearer and outdoor plans become easier.
This is an excellent month for beach and surf retreats, particularly if you want the classic tropical Panama experience.
It is also the beginning of a busy travel period, particularly toward the end of the month.
Best for:
Beach, surf, outdoor yoga and end-of-year retreats.
Consider:
Holiday-period pricing and availability.
When should you visit each Panama yoga retreat destination?
The best time also depends on where you are going.
Santa Catalina
Santa Catalina works year-round, but the experience changes with the season.
For the driest weather, choose December through March.
For stronger surf conditions, April through November is particularly interesting. The Panama Tourism Authority describes this as Santa Catalina's longer peak surf season.
If Coiba and marine activities are important to you, consider what you want to see and ask the retreat or local operator about seasonal conditions.
Best overall: December–April
Best for surf: April–November

Cambutal
Cambutal is particularly appealing when you want the combination of surf, jungle and retreat life.
The broader Azuero and Los Santos region is seasonal, with dry weather generally favored for predictable outdoor plans and the green season bringing more vegetation and stronger seasonal wildlife opportunities.
The Pacific coast also offers whale-watching opportunities during the middle of the year.
Best for dry weather: December–April
Best for surf and green landscapes: roughly April–November

Cañas
Cañas is less about choosing the "perfect" weather window and more about choosing the kind of retreat you want.
Its appeal is its quieter Pacific setting and private wellness environment.
If outdoor activities are central to your retreat, December through April gives you the most predictable conditions.
If you like tropical greenery and don't mind rain, the green season can be equally compelling.
Best for predictable weather: December–April
Best for lush nature: May–November

Boquete
Boquete is different because of its elevation.
The temperatures are cooler than on Panama's coasts, and the landscape is defined by mountains and cloud forest rather than beach.
The dry season is generally easier for hiking and outdoor activities, while the wet season makes the surrounding vegetation particularly lush.
Best for hiking and clearer mountain conditions: December–April
Best for lush cloud forest: May–November

Bocas del Toro
Bocas requires a little more flexibility.
Its Caribbean location means rainfall patterns are not identical to the Pacific coast, and conditions can vary across the archipelago.
If your priority is a beach holiday with consistently predictable sunshine, don't assume the general Panama dry-season calendar tells the entire story.
If your priority is jungle, snorkeling, diving and island life, different parts of the year can offer different advantages.
Best approach: Check the specific retreat and island rather than relying solely on the national dry/green-season calendar.

What's the best season for a yoga and surf retreat?
If surfing is the main reason you are going, the answer changes.
Around Santa Catalina and Panama's Pacific coast, the Panama Tourism Authority identifies April through November as the longer peak surf season, when stronger swells can create more interesting waves.
That does not mean December through March is bad for surfing.
It means the experience is different.
During the dry season, you get clearer skies and more predictable weather, while the Pacific can still offer good waves.
So:
For better surf potential: April–November
For drier weather + surf: December–March
If you are a beginner, ask the retreat which months and beaches they use for instruction rather than choosing solely based on the general surf calendar.
What's the best season for a restorative yoga retreat?
If your main goal is rest, weather becomes slightly less important.
You are not necessarily trying to spend eight hours outside.
You may actually appreciate a retreat where a tropical afternoon rainstorm gives you an excuse to stay under a roof with a book.
For restorative, meditation or wellness retreats, I would prioritize:
The retreat facilitator
The daily schedule
The accommodation
The group size
The amount of free time
Then the weather
A beautiful destination cannot compensate for a retreat program that leaves you exhausted.
What's the best season for a women's yoga retreat?
Women's retreats run throughout the year, so the specific retreat matters more than the season.
If you want beach, surf and outdoor activities, December through April is the easiest choice.
If you want a more immersive retreat environment and don't mind tropical rain, the green season can work very well.
And because women-only retreats often focus heavily on connection, workshops and wellness, you may spend more time indoors than you would on a surf retreat anyway.

Dry season or green season?
If you're still undecided, think about the trade-off this way:
Dry seasonGreen seasonMonthsDecember–AprilMay–NovemberRainLess frequentMore frequentLandscapeDrier, sunnierVery green and lushOutdoor plansMore predictableMore flexibleSurfGoodOften stronger on Pacific coastWaterfallsLess dramaticFullerWildlifeGoodExcellent for some seasonal speciesBeach timeEasierMore weather-dependentAtmosphereClassic tropical vacationMore immersive, lush, tropical
The dry season is the easier recommendation.
The green season may be the more interesting one.
Does it rain all day during Panama's rainy season?
Usually, you should not think about Panama's green season as six months of nonstop rain.
Rainfall patterns vary by region, and tropical showers can be followed by clear periods.
Panama's official tourism guidance describes the green season as unpredictable but emphasizes that sunny periods return after rain.
That said, weather is weather.
If you are booking an expensive retreat specifically because you want seven days of uninterrupted beach time, the dry season gives you better odds.
If you are comfortable adapting your plans, the green season can be beautiful.
What should you pack for a yoga retreat in Panama?
Your packing list should change slightly depending on the season.
During the dry season
Bring:
Lightweight clothing
Sun protection
A hat
Swimwear
Yoga clothes
Reusable water bottle
Light layer for air-conditioned spaces
During the green season
Add:
Lightweight rain jacket
Quick-drying clothes
Waterproof bag or dry bag
Extra shoes or sandals
Insect repellent
Clothing that can get wet
And regardless of the season, remember that Panama is tropical.
Your yoga clothes will probably get more use than your sweater.
So, when should you book your Panama yoga retreat?
If you want the simplest answer:
December through April is the safest choice for a first Panama yoga retreat.
You get the country's driest and most predictable weather and can comfortably combine yoga with beaches, surfing, hiking and other outdoor activities.
But don't dismiss the rest of the year.
If you want surf, the Pacific can become more interesting from April onward.
If you want jungle, waterfalls and wildlife, the green season has plenty to offer.
And if what you really want is to slow down, listen to the rain and spend a week somewhere completely different from home, there is no reason a rainy afternoon should ruin the experience.
The better question is not:
"When is the best time to visit Panama?"
It is:
"What do I want this retreat to feel like?"
Start there.
Then look at the calendar.
