Yoga Retreats in Panama: The Complete Guide
Planning a yoga retreat in Panama? Explore Santa Catalina, Cambutal and Cañas, compare retreat styles, prices, seasons and find the right experience.
By Ian Pescod · Last updated October 6, 2026
Panama may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think about a yoga retreat. Costa Rica has a much more established reputation in the retreat world, but Panama offers something different: a mix of Pacific surf towns, jungle, islands, wildlife and quieter destinations where yoga can be part of a broader experience.
For travelers who want more than a resort-style retreat, Panama is particularly interesting. You can combine yoga with surfing in Santa Catalina or Cambutal, choose a more secluded wellness experience in Cañas, or simply use a retreat as a way to slow down and experience a different side of the country.
This guide covers where to go, what kinds of retreats you'll find, when to visit, what they typically cost, and how to choose the right one.
Why Choose Panama for a Yoga Retreat?
Panama's biggest advantage is variety.
The country has both Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, mountain regions, tropical forests and islands. For yoga travelers, that means the setting can be as important as the retreat itself.
The Pacific coast is particularly well suited to active and nature-focused retreats. Santa Catalina is known for surfing and is also an important gateway to Coiba National Park, with opportunities for diving, snorkeling, kayaking and marine wildlife experiences.
Further east along the Azuero Peninsula, destinations such as Cambutal and Cañas offer a quieter Pacific setting. Panama's tourism planning documents identify both Cambutal and Cañas within the Pedasí/Tonosí destination region.
That makes Panama a good fit if you want your retreat to include more than time on a yoga mat.
Where Are the Best Places for a Yoga Retreat in Panama?
There isn't one best destination. The right place depends on the kind of retreat you're looking for.
Santa Catalina
Best for: Surf, ocean activities, active retreats, nature and a combination of yoga and adventure.
Santa Catalina is one of Panama's best-known Pacific destinations for surfing and marine activities. It is also one of the country's main gateways to Coiba National Park.
The area has several beaches, including Playa Santa Catalina and Playa El Estero, and offers access to activities such as surfing, snorkeling, diving and kayaking. Whale watching is also possible during Panama's Pacific whale season, generally from July through October.
For yoga retreats, Santa Catalina works particularly well when you want a balance between practice and time outdoors.
Our current Panama selection includes several retreats in Santa Catalina, with a strong concentration of women's wellness retreats combining yoga with breathwork, Pilates, restorative practices and personal development.
Cambutal
Best for: Surf, nature, adventure and a quieter Pacific-coast setting.
Cambutal is located in the Tonosí region of Los Santos and has a distinctly more remote feel than Panama's better-known beach destinations.
The surrounding area is suited to surfing, outdoor activities and nature-focused travel. For a yoga retreat, the appeal is less about having a long list of things to do and more about having space to slow down while still being close to the ocean.
Our Panama retreat selection includes programming at Sansara Surf & Yoga in Cambutal, including surf, family and adventure-oriented retreats.
Cañas
Best for: Luxury wellness, privacy, nature and transformational retreats.
Cañas offers a very different retreat environment from Santa Catalina or Cambutal.
Rather than centering the experience around surfing, the retreats currently listed here are more focused on wellness, personal development, meditation, breathwork and nature.
One of the current retreats takes place at Alaya Panama, a luxury property overlooking the Pacific coast. The setting is particularly suited to travelers looking for a more secluded and immersive wellness experience.
Bocas del Toro
Best for: Caribbean island life, tropical scenery and ocean-centered travel.
Bocas del Toro is one of Panama's major Caribbean destinations, known for its islands, tropical environment and relaxed atmosphere.
It is an obvious destination to consider for a yoga retreat because of its natural setting, although our current published Panama retreat selection does not have an upcoming retreat there.
That distinction matters: a destination can be a good fit for yoga travel without necessarily having a strong selection of retreats available at a given time.
Boquete
Best for: Mountains, cooler temperatures, nature and a slower pace.
Boquete offers a completely different environment from Panama's coastal retreat destinations.
Located in the highlands of Chiriquí, it is known for its mountain environment, coffee production and cooler climate.
It could be a strong setting for future yoga and wellness retreats, particularly for travelers who prefer mountains and cooler temperatures to the beach. At the moment, however, our published Panama retreat selection does not include an upcoming retreat in Boquete.
What Types of Yoga Retreats Can You Find in Panama?
The retreat experience varies considerably depending on the destination and host.
Yoga and Surf Retreats
Santa Catalina and Cambutal are natural choices if you want to combine yoga with surfing.
These retreats typically build yoga into a broader active holiday, rather than making yoga the only focus. Depending on the program, surfing may be accompanied by other activities such as paddleboarding, hiking or time in the ocean.
This is a good choice if you enjoy movement and adventure and don't want to spend your entire retreat indoors.
Women's Retreats
Women's retreats currently make up a significant part of our Panama selection.
These range from restorative and wellness-focused programs to retreats centered around breathwork, personal development, Pilates, meditation and community.
Upcoming examples in Santa Catalina include The Vital Woman: Return to Self, The Transcend Retreat and Retreat to Recharge.
These retreats differ considerably in approach, so it is worth looking beyond the label "women's retreat" and reading what each host actually offers.
Family Retreats
Panama also has programming designed specifically for families.
A family retreat at Sansara in Cambutal has combined yoga and meditation with children's yoga, surfing, paddleboarding, biking and other outdoor activities.
For families, the retreat structure and accommodation matter just as much as the yoga itself, so look carefully at what is included for children and how the daily schedule is organized.
Luxury Wellness Retreats
If comfort and privacy are priorities, Panama has options at the higher end of the retreat market.
The current selection includes luxury properties offering private or shared accommodation, wellness programming, meditation, breathwork and other practices.
These retreats tend to be less about intensive physical yoga and more about creating an immersive environment for rest, reflection and personal development.
Breathwork, Meditation and Restorative Retreats
Not every yoga retreat in Panama is centered around a strong physical practice.
Some current retreats emphasize breathwork, meditation, Reiki, restorative yoga and nervous-system-focused relaxation.
These can be a better fit if your goal is to slow down and recover rather than train or deepen your physical practice.
What Are Yoga Retreats in Panama Actually Like?
There is no single "Panama yoga retreat" experience.
A retreat at a Pacific surf destination can feel completely different from one at a secluded jungle property.
In Santa Catalina or Cambutal, expect the ocean to play a significant role. Surfing, swimming, paddleboarding, boat trips or simply spending time on the beach may be part of the experience.
In Cañas, the emphasis can be more inward: meditation, breathwork, wellness treatments, personal development and time in nature.
The yoga itself also varies. Current retreats in our Panama selection include Hatha, Vinyasa, restorative yoga, meditation, breathwork, Reiki, Pilates and other movement practices.
For that reason, don't choose a retreat based only on its location. Look at the host, schedule, practice style, accommodation and overall intention of the retreat.
How Much Does a Yoga Retreat in Panama Cost?
Based on the current published retreats in our Panama selection, prices range from approximately $2,200 to $5,750, depending on the retreat, accommodation and package.
Examples include:
Entre Olas y Raíces in Santa Catalina: approximately $2,200–$2,800
Retreat to Recharge in Santa Catalina: approximately $2,200–$3,800
The Transcend Retreat in Santa Catalina: approximately $3,200–$3,800
The Vital Woman: Return to Self in Santa Catalina: approximately $2,775–$4,250
New Year's Eve Retreat in Cambutal: approximately $2,996–$5,086
Be The Miracle Retreat in Cañas: approximately $3,300–$5,750
These prices are for the retreat packages themselves and may not include international flights or every transportation cost.
Always check the individual retreat listing for exactly what is included before booking.
When Is the Best Time for a Yoga Retreat in Panama?
Panama has a tropical climate, with regional differences caused by elevation and geography.
In general, the Pacific side experiences a drier period during roughly the beginning of the year, while rainfall increases during the wetter months. The exact conditions vary by destination.
For a beach or surf-oriented retreat, the drier months can be attractive if your priority is spending more time outdoors.
But the wetter season isn't necessarily a reason to avoid Panama. Tropical rain can be part of the experience, and many retreats are designed around a combination of indoor practice, outdoor activities and time in nature.
If you're particularly interested in whale watching around Santa Catalina, Panama's whale-watching season generally runs from July through October.
Ultimately, the best time depends on what you want from the retreat: reliable beach weather, surfing, marine wildlife, or simply a quieter period for rest.
How Do You Choose the Right Yoga Retreat in Panama?
Start with the experience you actually want.

A combination of yoga and outdoor activities

Panama vs. Costa Rica for a Yoga Retreat
Both Panama and Costa Rica can be excellent choices for a yoga retreat, but they offer somewhat different experiences.
If you're primarily looking for a large selection of established retreat destinations and a well-developed yoga tourism ecosystem, Costa Rica may have more options to choose from.
Panama is particularly appealing if you want to explore a less obvious destination and combine your retreat with surfing, marine activities, nature or a quieter Pacific-coast experience.
The choice ultimately comes down to the individual retreat rather than the country alone.
A great retreat in Panama can be a much better fit than a mediocre retreat in a more established yoga destination.

A More Considered Way to Find a Yoga Retreat in Panama
A yoga retreat is more than a destination and a few daily yoga classes.
The setting, host, group, accommodation, practice style and overall intention can completely change the experience.
That's why we don't try to list every retreat available in Panama. We focus on building a considered selection of retreats worth traveling for, with enough context to help you understand what each one is actually like.
Whether you're looking for surf and adventure in Santa Catalina, a slower Pacific experience in Cambutal, or a secluded wellness retreat in Cañas, Panama is worth considering when you're looking for something beyond the conventional yoga-retreat destination.
